Historians weren’t even sure if it was Gijsbrecht who painted this brilliant piece of art. They called the unknown painter ‘Master of the Winter Landscapes’ and he definitely deserves this title. The stunning details in the fine branches of the tree, the light and dark contrast and the snowy relief of the landscape are all signs of the Master’s skill
Gijsbrecht Leytens began his apprenticeship with Jacob Vrolijck, before becoming a master in Antwerp in 1611. His pupils included the young Roccotailliato who came from southern Europe to learn the art of Flemish landscape painting.
