This surrealist work dates from the Classic Period (from 1941 until 1989) and is considered a study because it belongs to Dalí’s series “Mad Tristan”. In other words: The painting was created to accompany another painting called “Mad Tristan”. It depicts the Cornish knight Tristan and the Irish princess Iseult, both characters from a 12th century Celtic legend. Their scandalous love story inspired Wagner to write an opera. The immense imagination which Salvador Dalí undoubtedly needed to create this painting is frankly admirable.
