Who was Michelangelo? Michelangelo’s sculptures at The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, known best as simply Michelangelo, was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet of the High Renaissance born in the Republic of Florence, who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art.He was born in 1475 in a village now called “Caprise Michelangelo” in Italy and he died 1564 in Rome. His artistic versatility was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival, the fellow Florentine, Leonardo da Vinci. Several scholars have described Michelangelo as the greatest artist of his age and even as the greatest artist of all time. Michelangelo’s Pieta is arguably the most famous works of all time, so the theory of the artist being the greatest of all time is definitely to be considered. Michelangelo’s sculptures are worth millions of dollors because of their relative rareness (he created 174 works including paintings and drawings) and collecters’ eagerness to own a piece of him. So if you would ever come across the following signature on one of the dusty pieces of art in your grandmother’s attic, look no further, you have just become a millionaire.
